We Are Thankful
/This time of year reminds us of all that we need to be thankful for. The CACFP always appreciates our faithful donors who support us monetarily. We would not exist without their help. But we are taking this time to specifically recognize some of the local in-kind donations that happen during this season of giving and throughout the year.
A recent major event, that is held annually, is the Turkey Ride organized by Maine Sport and supported by Camden Hannaford. It is an amazing sight to see a long line of bicyclists come riding into the parking lot with turkeys strapped to their backs. We were blessed to receive 51 turkeys this year as well as several side items to add to families’ Thanksgiving.
Monetary donations given that day will help to provide additional turkeys and trimmings.
Another annual effort is the food drive of Cub Scout Pack 200. This group of young boys grades 1-5 go door-to-door placing flyers of requests for food (as well as clothing). The following week they return to pick up the donations. It is heartwarming to see our young learn the importance of giving to others.
Other local support came from our high school, CHRHS, that collects items each November, First National Bank (their annual “Sugar and Spice” food drive), Quarry Hill who donates regularly and Midcoast Recreational Center (a recent donor).
On a weekly basis we receive donations of meat, bread and pastry from the Camden and Rockland Hannafords. During the summer and into the fall we receive amazing fresh produce from Erickson Fields. This past summer we received over 3000 lbs of produce. These donations help to supplement the nonperishables we receive from our government agencies.
Later this year there will be two more major food drives, one from the middle school, CRMS, and then in May the annual Camden Postal food drive. Both of these food drives bring many boxes of food to help fill our shelves.
Our hearts swell with thankfulness for these groups and also all the community members who help support their efforts to provide for those less fortunate.
Happy Holidays to all!
